Policy Development

WCO work in policy development is based on its worldwide network of leaders, experts, peers and resources dedicated to promoting optometry as a learned healthcare profession. The WCO’s goal is to facilitate and  enhance the development of eye and vision care worldwide. Through discussions at WCO meetings and conferences, membership of WCO committees and working groups, WCO members are able to inform and contribute to the development of policy for eye and vision care globally.

Policy documents produced by the WCO include:

A Global Competency-Based Model of Scope of Practice in Optometry – a framework for addressing the challenges of increased practitioner mobility across international borders and  the  need to promote greater harmonization in optometric education around the world

World Optometry – A Case Statement – an overview of the practice activities of the optometrist and how they relate to the global needs of the public

Public Health Toolkit -  resource for optometrists to understand and consequently drive or support Vision2020 initiatives
