15 January 2011
Location: Nova Southeastern University's Health Professions Division in Fort Lauderdale, Florida
Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Institute for Educational Research in the Health Professions is pleased to announce the call for papers for our fourth educational research conference. The Health Professions Educational Research Symposium (HPERS) is scheduled for January 15, 2011, at NSU’s Health Professions Division in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States of America.
The theme for this year’s conference is Recognizing, Teaching, and Modeling Professionalism. One of the unique aspects of teaching in the health professions is the need to foster skills, attributes, and values related to professional conduct. Faculty members have long recognized the complexities associated with teaching in the affective domain. We challenge ourselves to find effective teaching strategies to promote dependability, respect, compassion, empathy, problem-solving, cooperation, and organization. The landscape of professionalism changes as emerging technologies such as YouTube, Facebook, and Twitter continue to present new professional dilemmas. This symposium will serve to facilitate dialog and disseminate research regarding strategies that teach, model, recognize, and reward professional behaviors.
We invite faculty, administrators, clinical educators, and educational researchers to submit high quality abstracts for HPERS 2011. Abstracts can focus on one of three areas:
• Research – Demonstration of the impact of an educational or organizational strategy to promote professionalism in students in the health professions. Both quantitative and qualitative methodologies are acceptable. The abstract should include purpose, research questions, methodology, results, discussion, and conclusions.
• Innovative Strategies – Description of a novel or innovative approach to foster professionalism in the health professions. The abstract should include introduction, description of innovation, outcomes, and discussion, including future research recommendations.
• Workshop – A 90-minute session providing opportunities to develop tools/resources that enhance or support professionalism. Abstract proposal must include purpose, objectives, instructional methods, and expected learning outcomes.
We are looking for top-quality abstracts for poster presentations, 30-minute platform sessions, and 90- minute workshop sessions that will educate attendees and provoke progress and collaboration. Our opening keynote speaker is Franklin J. Medio, Ph.D., and our closing speaker is Carol Davis, D.P.T., Ed.D. Whether as a speaker, tutorial presenter, exhibitor, or sponsor, you will find that HPERS is the best forum to share your knowledge as the quality of our attendees is unsurpassed. Abstracts can be submitted by going through the HPERS Web site located at http://www.nova.edu/hpers then click on the link for Abstract Submission. All abstracts receive a peer-reviewed evaluation.
