We were saddened to hear of the death of Peter Smith FCOptom, who passed away last month at the age of 84.
Peter was the last ever Secretary of the British Optical Association and subsequently served as the first Academic Secretary of the new British College of Ophthalmic Opticians, now the College of Optometrists, until the end of 1981. He helped create the Applied Vision Association - a multi-disciplinary organisation aiming to promote and advance the application of research work in all areas related to vision.
Peter was also Secretary of the International Optometric and Optical League, now the World Council of Optometry, and Optometric Adviser and Deputy Secretary to the AOP. Peter was awarded an OBE in the New Years Honours list in 2010.
