VOSH/International presents the Humanitarian of the Year Award at its annual meeting to honor an individual who has distinguished him or herself by bringing eye care to underserved populations. The award recognizes a VOSH member who has improved visual welfare through leadership, invention, public health, developing sustainable eye care and furthering the understanding and correction of refractive error .
The VOSH/International Humanitarian Of The Year 2011 is Don Kuehn, OD.
Dr. Kuehn is a 1959 graduate of Southern College of Optometry and Practiced in Russell and Plainville, Kansas from 1959 to 2006. Dr. Keuhn served on 11 various state committees within the Kansas Optometric Association (KOA) and was district president for 2 years. He participated in various KOA charity programs and was awarded the Kansas Optometric Association OD of the year 2000, and was awarded the Vision Service Award 2004 by KOA for outstanding service with VOSH. In the mid 70's Franklin Harms (Founder of VOSH/International) and Don formed the first clinic team to include volunteers from other states; New York, Indiana, and Nebraska to Honduras. Dr. Keuhn has been the VOSH mission leader to Honduras and Panama for 16 years and will receive his award at this years annual meeting, in Boston at the New England College of Optometry, Sunday October 16, 2011.
