WCO supports WHO action plan

24 January 2012

The World Council of Optometry (WCO) has joined a group of International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB) member organisations in supporting the WHO (World Health Organization) Action Plan on Avoidable Blindness and Visual Impairment.

Eight IAPB member organisations, including WCO, have agreed to pool funding to support WHO work on the Action Plan. In 2012/13 a sum of $370,000 will be made available to contribute to WHO work towards delivery of the 2009-13 Action Plan for the Elimination of Avoidable Blindness and Visual Impairment. A further $340,000 is pledged in principle for 2013/14.

WCO President, Mrs Tone Garaas-Maurdalen commented: “I am delighted that WCO, through funds from our partner Optometry Giving Sight, has been able to support WHO’s work on the Action Plan. This work is at the very heart of what WCO looks to achieve from our global health partnerships.”
